Two suspended circular wooden structures rotate very slowly while a sound composition is played through a funky speaker from one corner of the gallery. The pieces are large (one is 24' across, the other is 18') but very delicate, built in a truss-like fashion from balsa and basswood. Although large and lumbering, they are moved by smaller devices: one is pushed by a small fan, the other moves like a hula hoop as a locomotive travels around its perimeter. The accompanying sound (Gene Autry singing, You Are My Sunshine) having been slowed and distorted to a dirge, keeps pace with the hypnotic movement of the sculptures. |
